limbo/Content Policy

Written by Julian Gomez

This Content Policy applies to all content delivered by you to any digital service provider (DSP).

Violations of this Content Policy may result in removal of releases, withholding of royalties, and/or suspension or termination of your account. Persistent or repeated violations may lead to further action.

This list will be updated as necessary to protect our deals with the music platforms.

You can't distribute:

  • AI-Generated Content

    • You can't distribute AI-generated content that is wholly or primarily generated by AI models trained on copyright-protected sound recordings without a license from the applicable copyright owner(s).

    • If a platform requires it, you must correctly label any content that includes AI-generated elements.

  • AI Impersonation

    • You cannot distribute content that imitates identifiable artists using AI voice cloning (e.g. "AI Drake", "AI Bad Bunny"-style releases).

  • Content owned by others

    • Tracks whose rights you do not control (or, in the case of back catalogue, have never controlled), or that include such tracks or parts of such tracks.

    • Tracks with uncleared samples.

    • Tracks that include hidden samples of other tracks, or that purport to be other tracks, whether or not those other tracks are controlled by you.

    • Remixes, mashups, sped up, slowed down, reverbed, or other derivative versions, unless you also control and deliver the original version(s) or have licensed the right to create and/or distribute the derivative version(s).

    • DJ mixes, unless you control the rights to all tracks in that mix

or have licensed the mix for commercial release.

  • Content that closely resembles other people’s content

    • Soundalikes.

    • Karaoke versions, unless you control the original recording.

    • Re-records, unless you control or have properly licensed the underlying composition and meet all of the following conditions:

      • The re-record is clearly differentiated from the original in the track metadata, using the Version/Subtitle field and/or the track title (e.g. "(Re-record)", "(New Recording)", "(2026 Version)").

      • Artist name, track title, and artwork are not used in a way that could confuse consumers with the original recording or the original artist.

      • A new, unique ISRC is assigned. You cannot reuse the ISRC from the original recording.

      • You can document the full rights chain (composition and master) and provide evidence if requested by Limbo or a DSP.

    • Re-masters, unless you control the original recording.

    • Live recordings, unless you control the original studio recording.

  • Misleading artist names and artwork

    • Artist names that could be confused with well-known artists, even with slight misspellings (e.g. "Tylor Swift", "Bad Bonny").

    • Artwork that imitates the visual style, imagery, or branding of popular artists or third-party brands.

    • Any unauthorized use of logos, characters, images, or sounds belonging to third parties in a way that could mislead consumers.

  • Content that is unlawful or objectionable

    • Incites violence or hatred, or contributes to real world harm.

    • Is defamatory.

    • Hate speech.

    • Promotes the exploitation or abuse of minors.

    • Promotes sexual violence.

    Explicit Content

If you deliver tracks that use explicit language but otherwise comply with this Content Policy, you are expected to select the "Explicit" checkbox when uploading. Do not add "(Explicit)" or similar tags directly in the track title.

Metadata and Quality Standards

Metadata

Required:

  • Accurate and non-misleading metadata (correct artists, titles, and roles)

  • No advertising, URLs, prices, or SEO keywords in titles, artist names, or artwork

  • Artists listed correctly, each in their own field

  • Correct release dates and country availability

  • Language configured at both album and track level

Prohibited:

  • Generic artist names such as "Relaxing Music", "Rain Sounds", or "Sleep Baby"

  • Emojis in titles, artist names, lyrics, or any metadata field

  • Artist names in title fields

  • Keyword stuffing in titles

Artwork

Required:

  • High resolution, square format

  • Original and non-copyright-infringing

Prohibited:

  • URLs, barcodes, QR codes, price stickers, or promotional callouts

  • References to DSPs (e.g. "Available on Spotify/Apple Music")

  • Explicit sexual content or graphic violence

  • Third-party logos, brands, or characters without authorization

Audio

Required:

  • Final masters only, correctly encoded

  • No watermarks or promos

Prohibited:

  • More than 10 seconds of silence at the beginning or end

  • Cut, corrupted, or incomplete tracks

  • Advertising tracks embedded as music

Undesirable Content

Although allowed, the following types of content may be considered undesirable by some DSPs and might not be published.

  • Functional or noise content

    • Meditation sounds

    • Sleep sounds

    • White noise

    • Rain or other environmental sounds

Please note that functional and noise content is prohibited on Deezer and Meta, and may be subject to demonetization or reduced royalty rates on other platforms.

  • Duplicate, repetitive or mislabelled content

    • Multiple tracks packaged as a new UPC where those tracks have been delivered under one or more other UPCs.

    • Multiple tracks delivered as a new UPC where that UPC features the same track more than once.

    • Tracks with multiple ISRCs.

    • Reusing an ISRC from an older track on a new audio file in order to inherit its streaming history. Each recording must have its own unique and correct ISRC.

    • Tracks delivered multiple times with minor imperceptible differences between versions, or with differences only in metadata or artwork, in order to artificially increase play count.

If a DSP policy is stricter than this policy, the stricter rule prevails.
